I really wanted this place to be good as we don't have too many locally owned diners on the southside. It started off bad from the moment we walked in. No hostess or waitress to seat us, just told to find a table. That would be fine but the place was busy and really understaffed. So people just milled around until they found an open table and just stood next to it until it was cleaned or just sat with someone else's leftovers. Part of dining was blocked off also, don't know if it was lack of staffing or some other issue. Once seated we were given menu right away but the waitress did not come back for 15 minutes to ask if we even wanted a drink. I got the pulled pork which was not very good and it came out dry. I wanted to ask for some bbq sauce but saw the waitress for the longest time. She finally did get me some sauce but my food was cold at that point. My daughter got a chili dog and fries. The chili on it was gross. The marinara and texture of the cheese sticks were not good also. Never saw any type of management in the place. Maybe breakfast is better but I'm not will to gamble. I'll stick with Mullets for breakfast.

Fried Chicken, cozy mess and breakfast is why we come here. Good eats and have had great service. Coffee is excellent

Use to bring a client who is special needs here often and there was one lady that was awesome and very patient with him! We came back today after a few months and service was slow even though there are 3 waitress and then they lost the ticket after we already had waited 20 minutes. Disappointed in the service today.

We came here on Mother's Day for breakfast following church. We were lucky enough to get there before the big rush of people but did have about a 15 min wait. This restaurant isn't anything spectacular inside, just booths and tables with older carpet and decor. Meal wise, my husband got the Biscuits and Gravy over Hashbrowns and I had the 2 Pancake, 1 Meat (Bacon), and 2 Eggs option. When our food came, it looked tasty but upon taking a bite, my husband's meal was bland, not much more to say there. My pancakes were chewy and I could not figure out what spice was in them. The bacon was good but how can you mess up bacon? The eggs were just alright. Based on the breakfast food alone, we won't be back for quite some time.

In the last couple of months have had bad luck with this place. Think I will give them some time to get their act together. This time we walked in and there were about half of the tables empty but they were not seating any customers. The waiting area was full. We decided they had more customers than they could handle and went elsewhere. Previously we have had slow service with cold food when it finally came out.

Me, my partner and his sister dined here today, and we've been meaning to try a Cozy Cafe for awhile now. Let me just tell you now, by looking at the menu, that this place is strictly comfort food, and there are limited items for the health conscious. There is breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the menu had a wide variety, and has choices to fit everyone's needs. I saw a kid's menu, but didn't bother to look at it, as children were not with us. The interior to this specific Cozy Cafe had the feeling you were in a former Bonanza/Ponderosa/Denny's...which actually helps the "cozy" feeling a bit. It was clean and there were MODERN flat screen TV sets strewn about the dining area. I had the Alfredo cavatelli bake with provolone cheese and meatballs, which was DELICIOUS! My partner had the chicken fried steak with potatoes and cottage cheese, which he found delicious as well, and my partner's sister had the Cozy Burger without bacon, and with onion rings. The burger was great, but the onion rings were a tad on the flavorless side, but no major complaints. Our waitress Cynnamon was great and she was attentive to all our needs. A+! We will be back someday. There are so many restaurants in Des Moines to try! With the broccoli and cheese bites as an appetizer, the bill for the three of us was about $40 give or take. I'd say if you're wondering, GO FOR IT!

I came here with a couple of coworkers and cozy is the appropriate adjective to use to describe Cozy Cafe. The interior is decorated to resemble a living room at a grandparent's house, old school but confortable. Their staff is friendly and seem to know many of the regulars who eat here. Their food is great here! They serve standard diner food, but also have some specials of their own. Their meat dishes were very flavorful and I recommend it. If you are looking to eat a relaxing meal with comfort food, you will enjoy your time here.

I have been to this location of the Cozy Cafe three times, and all I can say is "Yay! A REAL diner!" SPOILED ALERT: Yes, that means you...and sometimes me. =) If you are expecting fast service and fast food, get your meal at Burger King. (And for the love o' Pete, DO NOT go to Hardee's if you actually want fast food or to get what you ordered. Worst. Fast Food joint. Ever.) Here at the Cozy Cafe, the fresh meat is actually cooked when you place your order. We have had two breakfasts and one dinner here. Yes, one of those breaksfasts was on Mother's Day. No, we didn't make reservations as it was just the 2 of us. Seriously, family groups went here without making reservations and had to wait - waaah, what on Earth were you expecting?!! The Place: Cozy. Diner. Yay! The Service: Kind, quicker than the chain diners, and excellent. The Food: Steak and eggs for breakfast - yum! They are also listed as being voted the "Best Fried Chicken in Des Moines" and after my dinner, I'd have to agree. The Price: Affordable and lower than all but Denny's, with A+ quality of food.

My family loves this place and we visit often. The menu offers something for everyone but it's not overwhelming. The service is always friendly and efficient and the food is good ole down home cooking. My favorites are the fried chicken and if you want breakfast you can't lose if you order the cozy mess. I encourage you to visit any of thief locations you will not be disappointed.

Yelp indicated that they opened at 6 o'clock. They do not. I drove 8 miles to have breakfast and found that it was closed.

Slow service, even when the restaurant is quiet on a Monday morning - 40 minutes from arrival to food. I had the steak and eggs - the steak was rare as requested, but charred on the outside just like the toast. The hash browns were nearly flavorless and the eggs (over easy) were good but not stellar. We're two for two for mediocre experiences here, so I'm guessing it's not a fluke.

Great food. Any meal you get here will fill you up. I've tried several dishes and have yet to find one I don't like.

It started off with bad service and got progressively worse as we received our food. The chubby blonde waitress with the french pigtail seemed friendly when we walked in but she just couldn't get it together. The six of us set for 5 minutes noticing that our water was sitting on the counter waiting to be delivered to the table so I finally got up and got it myself. They're only about four other customers in a restaurant. She walked over and said that she was going to bring it to us I said that's okay we were just thirsty. We placed our order and waited an extremely long time for the food to arrive. My son said, this can't be good anytime you have to wait this long somebody's order is cold. He was right all the potatoes with meals were cold and covered with tasteless and lukewarm gravy. My dad had biscuits and sausage gravy that had no sausage and no taste, my son had chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy and the worst macaroni and cheese that any of us ever tasted, my grandson ordered a bacon cheeseburger but there was no bacon on it. There was something wrong with every order on the table. We didnt send anything back because we were in a hurry and we were hungry. The waitress brought the bill, but before I reached for it I asked if she could change it since there wasn't any bacon on the hamburger. She said I'll take his drink off, something to make up for the bacon, I said okay. She brought the bill back again and I said, I forgot to ask you did you make sure the 25 percent off for the 3 seniors meals was removed. oh no I forgot she said. Again she had to fix the bill. When she brought it back that's the first time that I had actually seen the bill there was charge for two sides on it for about $4. I said we didn't order any extra sides. She said the sides don't come with meals. I said you led us to believe that they did. She took $4 out of her pocket threw it on the table and sarcastically said, I'm sorry we're such a bad restaurant with bad food and bad service. I said I couldn't agree more pick up my $4 and left.

The location (and the new seventh location in Johnston) have larger food selections than the other smaller Cozy Cafes. This one is huge. I have had excellent chicken and brisket here. If it wasn't so far away from where I live, this would be my favorite Cozy Cafe. I do miss the former head cook (the one who had previously worked for Famous Dave's). This is one of the rare places in town where the cook or a manager actually walks around checking on customers. (Another review mentioned "pj pants" worn by a cook. Probably the guy I was talking about since that's the type of pants that chefs wear, often along with those odd shoes.) Look for Groupon and Deal Chicken specials... Two can eat for around $10 that way!

.I've always had mixed opinions. we went last night, i ordered the feta salad, mixed greens, tomato, red onions and croutons. Of course the feta. It came with iceberg lettuce and a few shreds of carrot. It had lots of feta. Pretty disappointed.

Our whole experience sucked... we had crummy service and food was far from the award winning meal we heard about. Our fried chicken was raw.. bloody raw. When we told our server about our food he said it was bone marrow and not blood. There was blood on my plate and I showed him. He was argumentative and wanted us to eat it that way or he would put it in the fryer longer. I wouldn't eat it that way so he put it in the fryer longer. Ok.. so now it came back over done and gross. While waiting he told the people behind us that he wouldn't serve anything that he wouldn't eat... than he must be an animal if he would eat that. I would never step through that door again. My husband and I were sick tonight!

1 star is generous. Food service was slow, presentation was terrible, food was mediocre at best. Manager running around in pj pants... Servers complaining about other customers on the floor. Watched a family wait 7 minutes to be seated.
